Protect the right to seek asylum

The right to seek protection from persecution is enshrined in international and in U.S. law. The U.S. is obligated to grant asylum and other forms of relief to people who can demonstrate that they meet eligibility requirements. Efforts to limit access to asylum, such as requiring people to schedule an online appointment before entering the U.S. to request asylum, have caused harm and hardship to asylum seekers.
We must ensure that U.S. policy does not limit opportunities for people to apply for asylum. We must also ensure the standard for granting asylum applications does not add undue burdens, such as requiring evidence that is hard to obtain or limiting the time available for an applicant to obtain legal representation.
