On April 1, the Care First Community Coalition organized a vigil and march at Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail, recognizing the four people incarcerated at Santa Rita Jail who lost their lives in just the first two months of 2023, along with the 63 others who have lost their lives in Alameda County’s deadly jail since 2014.

Nearly a hundred people arrived to demand that Alameda County divest from incarceration and invest instead in community-based healing, housing, and safety.

Since the vigil, another person has died at Santa Rita Jail, bringing the death count to five lives lost at Santa Rita Jail this year alone so far.
