Content Type: Document

During the summer of 1931, representatives of the Federal
Children's Bureau and the President's Organization
on Unemployment Relief, following a scientific survey of the
needs in this field, approached the American Friends Service
Committee of Philadelphia requesting them to undertake relief
work among the children of unemployed miners in the bituminous
coal fields. After very careful consideration, the Committee
decided to undertake this service which it has carried on
during the past year.
