Workshop looks at the power of base community organizing

In February 2024, AFSC Oregon Project Voice Director Pedro Sosa and Associate Alonso Oliveros offered a workshop on “The Power of Base Community Organizing” to a cohort of Latinx leaders participating in the Unidos Leadership Development Program.

Through popular education methodology and interactive activities (aka “dinamicas” in Spanish), participants learned about the everyday challenges and struggles of disenfranchised communities. Simulations evoked empathetic and sympathetic responses to the plight of undocumented immigrants.

Unidos participants represent leaders from non-profit, corporate and educational institutions. Through their participation in this workshop, they continued to enhance their learning about conceptual frameworks and organizing principles to empower their respective communities.

"Pedro’s methodology and insight of Popular Education training principles allows for participants to self-reflect on their personal challenges and struggles," said Alonso. "This training ignites and reignites within them altruistic perspectives about their desire to lead and organize their communities to bring transformative change."
