Winter Intensive creates space for youth to pursue their dreams

By Prescott Jones and Maddy Foss, AFSC Twin Cities Healing Justice

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the AFSC Twin Cities Healing Justice Program recently hosted “Dream Chasers 2.0.” This Winter Intensive was a continuation of skill building for our Youth Board members.

Youth were asked what issues they are most interested in organizing around in their community. Responses ranged from anti-bullying to community safety. We are forming committees to focus our efforts over the remainder of the school year.

The Winter Intensive was an amazing experience. Youth spent time Vision Casting event ideas that would aim to inspire their peers to take part in being a proponent of change on issues our Youth Board members see in their school and community.

We had an array of co-facilitators who supported in the delivery of this Intensive. Each of our three days together began with a grounding circle and ended with vision casting.

Our first day featured seminars on “Inspiring Dreams, Creating Goals” and an “Intro to Artivism,” from AFSC’s SAFE cohort (Students Accelerating Fiercely Everyday).

Day two featured a seminar on “Discovering Dreams” and included an Artivism activity with Art Spring. Students collaborated to paint a mural of Martin Luther King Jr.

Our third and final day welcomed parent advocate Khulia Pringle with S.T.A.N.D. Up Minnesota Parents United. She led an “Education Advocacy Training” seminar. Khulia talked about the importance of youth using their voices at the school board level to seek the change they wish to see.

Thanks to all the youth and facilitators who took part. Stay tuned as we gear up for our Spring Intensive at which youth will explore their interests and organizing styles even further – supporting each other as community leaders to expand their dreams.
