El Fasher—the last government-held city in Darfur, Sudan—has fallen. Civilians now face imminent risk of mass violence, starvation, and being forcibly displaced from their homes.
The United States must act now to save lives and halt the genocide.
The war is the result of an escalating power struggle between opposing military forces in Sudan. Since April 2023, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—a paramilitary group that grew out of the militia responsible for atrocities in Darfur in the 2000s—have been fighting for control of the country.
For months now, the people of El Fasher have gone without food, medicine, and safe passage. With the RSF now in control, civilians face the immediate threat of mass executions and atrocities consistent with genocide. Satellite imagery shows evidence of mass killings—red-stained earth and bodies visible near RSF vehicles.
The fall of El Fasher represents a catastrophic escalation of the genocide in Sudan where:
More than 60,000 people have been killed.
Over 12 million have been displaced.
Famine is rapidly spreading.
Health care systems have collapsed while humanitarian access remains blocked.
AFSC calls on the Trump administration to:
Publicly condemn the RSF’s takeover and act with other members of the international community to end the genocide.
Establish protected humanitarian corridors to ensure urgent aid and safe passage.
Restore and expedite all U.S. humanitarian aid to Sudan.
Hold accountable the United Arab Emirates and other external sponsors of atrocities in Sudan.
Mobilize emergency civilian protection and strong diplomacy for peace.
Silence is complicity.
As a Quaker organization that believes all people are equal in dignity and worth, we cannot stay silent as genocide unfolds. The United States has the influence to stop the mass slaughter in Darfur. Millions of lives depend on choices made in the days ahead.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan. They continue resisting genocide in the hope of a more just, peaceful future.
The world cannot wait. Lives can be saved—if we act now.
