Sayrah Namaste speaking at the ABQ Center for Peace and Justice Enrique Cardiel
Recently I gave a presentation at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice called: “Inspirations from the Frontline: Strategies that Work Against Authoritarianism." It was based on research I collected during my sabbatical from frontline activists in dozens of countries who are sharing strategies and tactics with each other about how to protect democracy and stop authoritarianism.
Music is an important part of inspiring movements, so I invited the social justice band Lasotras to perform songs in English and Spanish that have spanned generations, and everyone sang along.

One of the sentiments that inspired me was this: "Authoritarianism is a global system. Our resistance must be global too.” In my presentation, I explained that activists have identified eight different authoritarian “plays” and then which strategies and tactics are most effective in response to each. I shared D-Hub's “anti-authoritarian toolkit” and podcast series.
My presentation was very well received, with several people asking me to share it with their faith community and at the University of New Mexico.
I encourage everyone to join AFSC's monthly webinar series that brings together AFSC supporters to learn about how to protect our communities, resist authoritarianism, and build peace with justice.
