Reframing the Conversation Around Syria in Europe

The AFSC Middle East office brought together leaders and activists from diverse sectors—law, humanitarian aid, journalism, human rights advocacy, and academia for a two-day event in Brussels, Belgium.

The convening, held on December 11th and 12th, 2024, was monumental given the rapid developments on the ground. Day one featured a closed-door workshop, followed by a second day hosted by Hon. Marco Tarquinio, S&D Shadow Rapporteur on Syria at the European Parliament. Participants engaged in rich dialogue, discussing the recent developments that led to the fall of the Assad regime and their vision for the future of Syria.

Through four main topics—accountability and transitional justice, governance and institutional development, refugees and safe return, and rebuilding Syria—activists and experts aimed to deliver a clear message to the European Parliament: What does the future of Syria look like, and what role can the EU play?
