Saturday, January 19

HANOVER-- Geisel School of Medicine’s MLK Celebration continues beginning with 8 AM breakfast followed by presentations all morning, lunch, a performance by the Dermatones, and a keynote by Alicia Ely Yamin on “Sexual Violence: Survival, Stereotypes, and Social Change.”   At the Life Sciences Center, Oopik Auditorium, Dartmouth College.  More info here

CONCORD--“The Coloring of Law and Punishment,” exploring the history of law and punishment in New Hampshire, disproportionate incarceration rates of racial and ethnic minorities, and the social impact of mass incarceration. Presenters will examine the consequences of incarceration on communities of color, intensifying surveillance and criminalization of poor and Black communities, and what a shift from punitive to restorative justice within our criminal system could look like.  Rudman Center, UNH Law School, Washington Street, Concord, 2-4pm.  The event is free and open to the public.  This is an Elinor Williams Hooker Tea Talk, sponsored by the Black Heritage Trail of NH.  More info here

CONCORD (and online)--AFSC's "State House Watch" radio show will feature Dr. King's 1957 speech, "Give Us the Ballot," plus a recording of a talk by Arnie Alpert on the 20-year campaign for acceptance of the holiday by the state of New Hampshire.  "State House Watch" airs from 5 to 6 PM on WNHN-LP, 94.7 FM in Concord and on the internet at wnhnfm.org.  The show will repeat Tuesday at 8 AM.   

JAFFREY-- “Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.” will take place on Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. at the United Church of Jaffrey. The event will be heralded at 4:45 p.m. with the ringing of the United Church’s Revere bell as part of the “Let Freedom Ring: Choose Non-Violence” national bell ringing ceremonies. Dottie Morris is keynote speaker.  Following the event, there will be a reception at the MLK Student Exhibit at the Jaffrey Civic Center.
