Looking back on 2020 and ahead to 2021

As we look forward to the new year, we wanted to look back with you all.  

First, our gift to you and to ourselves, was the moving and incredible Free Them All concert and teach-in we hosted on December 17th. If you missed it or would like to share the event widely, check it out. Many of you asked how to purchase your own Free Them All t-shirt or facemask - check out the online store here. From spoken word to music and visioning of a world without people caged, the night culminated in a call to submit your own art – visual, written or recorded – to jpiper@afsc.org by January 20, 2021. We’ll credit you on our webpage and social media as we share and sustain our belief that we will win.  

Looking forward to 2021 - This year will present new opportunities to take control of the destiny of our communities, state and country. We will insist on nothing less than the transformation of our immigration system, the repurposing our local and national budgets away from militarization and towards the environmental justice and the health of ourselves and our communities, and the growth and sustenance of mutual aid and support. •  Join our weekly Tuesday afternoon Coloradans for Immigrant Rights meetings via zoom (sign up here). Make a  difference towards transforming out federal laws on immigration this year! 
•  Are you or someone you love in deportation? join the Not1More Deportation table for mutual support and to get started changing our laws by emailing Gabriela Flora at gflora@afsc.org.  
• Come to our Spotlight on the Legislature Tuesday January 26, 5pm-6:30pm via zoom (registration required) – learn about the bills we’re supporting at the state legislature for universal representation in immigration courts and steps to protect the privacy of state data. Get engaged and ready to be a part of passing both measures! Please share on Facebook. 
•  Join us at a Love Knows No Borders caravan or vigil on February 1 at 6:00pm as part of our quarterly event continuing to call for the closure of GEO and the release of everyone detained there. (Details here) 
•  Make Valentines for people who are detained with a group of friends – email Jordan jgarcia@afsc.org  for more information and supplies. 
• Calling all Aurora residents! Make Aurora Safer with our partners at the Colorado People’s Alliance as they struggle to pass a pair of ordinances in one of Colorado’s most diverse cities – an immigrant legal defense fund and a safer policy preventing collusion with ICE and protecting the rights of all residents in municipal spaces. The first vote is January 11 so join us January 9 for a call-in day.  
• Stay up to date and action ready on social media – Like us on Facebook and Follow us on Twitter and our brand-new Instagram – If you have social media accounts join our amplifier volunteer team! We’ll provide you with critical and credible information on policy changes, support you in starting and navigating online conversations to create a more welcoming climate and using your accounts to engage, thank and hold accountable elected officials. Looking back on 2020 – For us, and maybe for you, 2020 felt like several long years because of its challenges and changes and loss of so many lives. We acknowledge all the people who died this year, whether from COVID, our militarized borders and local communities, homelessness, gun violence, or just the end of their time. There were many exclusionary and racist attacks, illnesses, and deaths, despite which and to honor our ancestors, we did not give up.

We’ve accomplished so much together – from mutual and solidarity aide to policy wins, you’ve continued the work of building beloved community. We deepened our commitment to care for one another; be it neighbors, relatives, or strangers. We learned more than ever not to depend on those in authority and how to protect each other from the capriciousness of our capitalist system. We seized this moment of crisis and leveraged the work of many years to sustain one another and change our policies. 

• Our ally members tapped their networks to provide about $25,000 in solidarity stimulus payments to mixed status and undocumented member families, who our government excluded from relief. This fund has kept our fiercest leaders and their children housed to date. Stay tuned in the next two weeks for ways to contribute your stimulus check (or a portion of it) to solidarity funds as a new round of stimulus is issued. While those in mixed status marriages will be eligible for this round of support, millions continue to be excluded as those in households where both taxpayers are undocumented can’t qualify even if their children are documented. (Fact sheet on eligibility this round and a webinar) 
• Our work, and that of our partners, fully exposed the inhumane and unsafe conditions in immigration detention and further eroded confidence in ICE as an agency. Directly impacted people’s voices supported by legal and community organizations have succeeded in shifting public perception dramatically in just two short years in favor of defunding detention and increasingly in favor of Abolishing ICE. Detention center numbers tave fallen to the lowest since 2010 and the lowest detention bed mandate from Congress since the early 2000’s just passed. We look forward to the work yet to be done to end immigration detention. The current mandate Congress passed funds more beds than are currently occupied.  
• Partnerships between healing justice and immigrant justice communities locally and nationally amplified the call to Free Them All! In September and December communities across the country organized to educate, engage, and transform systems that cage our siblings. We caravanned from GEO to the Denver County Jail and the Women’s Correctional Facility, all of which experienced terrible and preventable COVID outbreaks (in 2 square miles - 3,314 beds wait for a human being to be locked inside).  Learn more about why we are calling to free them all from jails, detention centers and prisons here www.afsc.org/freethemall  
• Our members finalized, published and distributed this bilingual guide, Crossing South, to prepare and equip anyone facing deportation to Mexico or Central America. www.afsc.org/xs Contact Gabriela Flora if you’d like wallet cards to distribute at gflora@afsc.org 
• We completed eight hotline trainings for the Colorado Rapid Response Network trainings across the state in Denver, Aurora, Pueblo, Grand Junction, Durango, and the Roaring Fork Valley, as well as several virtual trainings open to anyone. (Make sure our number is in your phone 1-844-864-8341) The hotline has taken almost a thousand calls and responded to close to 300 confirmed incidences of ICE in our communities – documenting and providing critical support and vetted information to families and the public. Email Jordan at jgarcia@afsc.org to become a part of this network.
• Our members met 16 times with six of the nine members of the Colorado Congressional Delegation, pushing for commitments to reduce and defund ICE and Customs and Border Patrol (Defund Hate campaign), as well as to advocate for legislation that would create a path to citizenship both for people brought to the US as children and for immigrants with TPS/DED temporary status (DREAM and PROMISE Act).  These relationships became instrumental as Congressmen Neguse and Crow’s oversight of the GEO facility intensified with the onset of COVID19. Both congresspeople participated in or led hearings on the negligence of detention centers and ICE over the last six months. Congressman Neguse invited our staff to interpret for him at the GEO detention facility when he visited with people inside. This summer, Congressman Crow committed to voting against increases to ICE and CBP budgets. Both fought to extend relief to some mixed status families in December.  

We are ready to bring the full pressure and encouragement of each and every one of you to elected officials at the national, state and local level for the policies we need, to help educate one another and build deeper alliances. Here's to facing 2021, together.

Mirando hacia adelante a 2021 - Este ano estará lleno de nuevas oportunidades para tomar el control del destino de nuestras comunidades, estado y país. Insistiremos en nada menos que la transformación de nuestro sistema migratorio, la redistribución de nuestros presupuesto locales y federales de la militarización hacia justica medioambiental y la salud de nuestros mismos y nuestras comunidades tanto el crecimiento y sostén de redes de apoyo mutuo.  Su voz, su compromiso, su amor profundo son la lena del fuego de cambios incrementales y transformativos.  ¡Para agregar su granito de maíz al trabajo actualizar esta visión con nosotros y abogar por una mejor política de inmigración, únete cumpliendo uno – o dos! - pasitos:

• Prepárense para la sesión de la legislatura estatal - Martes 26 de enero, 5:00pm-6:30pm por zoom (hay que registrar). Conozca los proyectos de ley que apoyamos a favor de una representación universal ante los cortes de inmigración y proteger la privacidad de los datos estatales ante el gobierno federal.  Hay que organizar para lograr victorias. • Únase a nosotros en una caravana o vigilia de ‘El Amor No Conoce Fronteras’ el 1 de febrero a las 6:00pm como parte de nuestra llamada de cerrar el centro de detención de GEO y la libertad de todos que se encuentran detenidos allí. (Detalles aquí)  
• Reclute a un grupo de amigos para hacer tarjetas de San Valentín para las personas detenidas: Envíe un correo electrónico a Piper en jpiper@afsc.org para obtener más información y suministros. Si quiere que su ser querido detenido recibe una tarjeta personalizada, mande su nombre y su número A a Piper también.  
• ¿Vives en Aurora? Haz Aurora más seguro para todos con nuestros compadres de la organización Colorado People’s Alliance. Estamos luchando para pasar dos decretos a nivel municipal en una de las ciudades más diversas de todo Colorado – un fondo de defensa legal para inmigrantes y una ley que prohíbe la colusión entre la migra y la policía local además de proteger a los derechos constitucionales de todos los residentes en espacios municipales. El primer voto será el 11 de enero.  Aliste su teléfono el 9 de enero para hacer muchas llamadas al favor  
• Manténgase actualizado y listo para la acción por medio de las redes sociales: Síguenos en Facebook , Twitter y nuestra nueva cuenta de Instagram. Si tiene cuentas en las redes sociales, ¡únase a nuestro equipo de voluntarios de amplificadores! Le proporcionaremos información crítica y creíble sobre los cambios en las políticas, lo ayudaremos a iniciar y navegar conversaciones en línea para crear un clima más acogedor y utilizar sus cuentas para involucrar, agradecer y responsabilizar a los funcionarios electos. Registrase aquí  
• Únase, o invite a sus amigos, a nuestras reuniones de aliados los martes, Coloradenses por los Derechos de los Inmigrantes a través de zoom (regístrese aquí) 

Mirando atrás al 2020 - Para nosotros, y tal vez usted, se sintió que el 2020 duro como varios años largos debido a sus desafíos y la pérdida de vidas. Queremos reconocer a todas las personas que fallecieron este ano debido a COVID, nuestras fronteras y localidades militarizados, la falta de casa, violencia de armas, o de causas naturales. Hubo muchas ataques excluyente y racista, enfermedad y fallecidos, pero aún, honrando a nuestros antepasados, no hemos rendido. 

Hemos logrado mucho juntos - desde el asistente mutuo y solidario hasta cambios políticas, usted, como parte de nuestro equipo, ha continuado el trabajo para construir una comunidad querida. Profundizábamos nuestro compromiso a nuestro prójimo, sea vecinos, familiares o desconocidos. Hemos aprendido más que nunca de no dependernos de la autoridad y de protegernos unos a otros de los caprichos del sistema capitalista. Nosotros incautamos este momento de crisis y lo aprovechábamos basado en anos de trabajo para sostenernos y lograr cambios.  

• Nuestros miembros aliados recurrieron a sus amigos para alzar y redistribuir alrededor de $25,000 en pagos de estímulo solidario a familias de estatus mixto e indocumentados para mantener a nuestras líderes más feroces alojadas durante la pandemia. El gobierno si incluyo ahora a parejas de estatus mixto, pero deja afuera otra vez millones de personas indocumentados y sus familias, incluyendo a niños ciudadanos con padres indocumentados. En las siguientes dos semanas compartiremos con ustedes como contribuir dinero tanto como aplicar por fondos y como seguir luchando para que todas las personas son incluidas. 
• El centro de detención tiene el número más bajo desde 2010 y el mandato de cama de detención más bajo del Congreso desde 
• Las asociaciones entre las comunidades de justicia criminal y justicia migratoria a nivel local y nacional han ampliado el llamado de ¡Liberen a todos! En septiembre y diciembre, en todo el país se organizaron para educar, involucrar y transformar los sistemas que encierran a nuestros hermanos. www.afsc.org/freethemall  
• Llevábamos acabo ocho capacitaciones en línea directa de la Red de Respuesta Rápida de Colorado en Denver, Aurora, Pueblo, Grand Junction, Durango y Roaring Fork Valley, así como varias capacitaciones virtuales abiertas a todos. Asegúrese de que nuestro número de la línea caliente esté en su teléfono 1-844-864-8341. Hemos respondido a casi 300 incidentes de la migra en la comunidad, proveyendo respaldo e informando a la comunidad de las operativas. Danos un ‘like’ en Facebook también!

• Nuestros miembros se reunieron 16 veces en total con seis de los nueve congresistas de Colorado, presionando por compromisos para reducir y retirar fondos de ICE y Aduanas y Patrulla Fronteriza (campaña Defund Hate), así como para abogar por una legislación que cree un camino hacia la ciudadanía tanto para personas traídas a los Estados Unidos cuando eran niños como para inmigrantes con estatus temporal TPS / DED (Ley DREAM y PROMISE). Estas relaciones se volvieron fundamentales a medida que la supervisión de los congresistas Neguse y Crow de las instalaciones de GEO se intensificó con el inicio de COVID19. Ambos congresistas participaron y dirigieron audiencias sobre la negligencia de los centros de detención y el ICE durante los últimos seis meses. El congresista Neguse invitó a nuestro personal a interpretarle en el centro de detención de GEO cuando visitó a las personas que estaban adentro. Este verano, el congresista Crow se comprometió a votar en contra de los aumentos en los presupuestos de ICE y CBP. 

Estamos listos por lo que viene, conjuntos. Lograremos los cambios necesarios dia en dia, codo a codo.
