Perspectives on migration

A visit to the U.S.-Mexico border and Los Angeles.

Travel with AFSC as we visit the U.S.-Mexico border, where we will meet with staff members who have monitored human rights abuses for decades, starting long before these issues entered the national conscience.

See the miles-long stretch of dangerous barricades that separate our two countries. Then listen to migrants’ stories—and experience a day at our urban farm in Los Angeles where you will see the beauty of the immigrant experience growing all around you.

The U.S.-Mexico border tour will begin south of San Diego near the San Ysidro port of entry and continue to Friendship Park, the southwestern-most corner of the U.S.-Mexico border. Local AFSC staff will talk with you about the impacts of the wall on border communities and share firsthand accounts of our work.

Travel to Los Angeles to visit AFSC’s Roots for Peace downtown urban farm where you’ll meet community members working to improve access to healthy foods while addressing racial injustice. Share an outdoor meal in the garden and get a mural tour from AFSC youth leaders.

The struggle for civil rights

A gathering in Montgomery, Alabama.

Travel with AFSC to visit the newly opened National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama and other iconic sites of the Civil Rights Movement.

Long before the Civil Rights Movement, AFSC identified racism and prejudice as an injustice in U.S. culture—a form of violence that causes immense suffering. AFSC has dedicated itself to advancing racial justice since 1925 and continues to do so to this day, with current AFSC staff working at the intersections of criminal justice, racial discrimination, and civil rights.

Begins:

March 12, Thursday evening, Montgomery, Alabama.

Concludes:

March 15, Sunday morning, Montgomery, Alabama.

Accommodations:

Located in downtown Montgomery

Highlights

Hear stories of AFSC staff and others who have demonstrated tremendous courage—often at great personal risk—to stand up for peace and justice. Learn more about AFSC’s work to overcome racism and inequality, through the decades to today.

Tour the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Situated on a six-acre site overlooking Montgomery, it’s a sacred space for truth-telling and reflection about racial terror in America and its legacy. Hear stories from AFSC alums who were directly involved in the Civil Rights Movement.

Visit key sites from the Civil Rights Movement like the Rosa Parks Museum and the King Memorial Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King, Jr. organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott and other early civil rights activity.
