AFSC Florida takes action against COVID-19

The American Friends Service Committee’s Miami Immigrant Rights Program is now AFSC Florida! Our growing work outside Miami in communities like Homestead has led us to rename the program to better represent our work.

New full-time community organizer Guadalupe De La Cruz brings years of valuable experience to our program in Florida, having already collaborated with the AFSC in her previous work. De La Cruz was recently featured in the AFSC’s weekly Facebook Live miniseries in both July and October, where she introduced her work and updated our supporters on the latest actions taken by the program to distribute resources in areas where coronavirus outbreaks have impacted local workers and their families.

Since March, FIR has provided over 5,000 free face masks to communities in the South Dade area, and has partnered with the Florida Department of Health to organize free COVID-19 testing clinics to rural locations where healthcare is limited.

Additionally, the program organizes a monthly food drive accompanied with personal protective equipment (PPE) and educational materials. During the first monthly distribution event in August, FIR provided 200 boxes of food, PPE and educational materials to farmworker communities. FIR also joined the AFSC in #FreeThemAll, our new campaign to get people out of prisons, jails, and detention centers—especially during this time of increased risk for prisoners during the pandemic—so that we can move toward a future without incarceration.
