Migwe Kimemia, AFSC Ohio Program Director, recently facilitated an interactive Digital Storytelling Challenge for African student organizers from the University of Dayton and Wright State University. During the interactive challenge, the students explored some ideas of combining the art of telling stories through a variety of multimedia outlets, including graphics, audio, video, and film.
On the whole, the students overwhelmingly embraced the digital storytelling strategy for building youth solidarity and changing the racist narrative about Africa and the people of African descent on college campuses in Ohio. In their own words, the student organizers wrote:
- “I learned about digital storytelling and how it involves authentic stories that can be felt by the audience through expressions.”

- “How to incorporate ideas into one large idea that shows a complete message”
- “I learned values I can incorporate in our African Night.”
- “I learned the importance of unity and having everybody’s voice represented.”
- “Team work makes the dream work. I learned that everyone has great ideas but when we come together, we can be better.”

- “It was very knowledgeable about producing a movie.”
- “I learned a lot about filmmaking and what it takes to produce a film.”
