Every year, communities around the world commemorate the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21 – a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all countries and peoples.
To mark this occasion, we look at some of the ways that communities are courageously working to address serious problems through nonviolence, with support from AFSC.
Young people transforming Somalia

In Guatemala, breaking down barriers through art
A first-of-its-kind program is helping young people in prison find healing, address personal issues, and gain the skills they need to rejoin and work for peace in their communities.
Challenging militarism in Israel
In Israel, AFSC works with local partners that counter the militarization of youth, including providing support for people who choose not to serve in the military. We also focus on shining a light on Israel’s military industry, the economic aspects of militarism, and its impacts around the globe.
