In New Jersey, and across the country, Departments of Corrections are subjected to little external oversight of their prisons, juvenile detention facilities or county jails. “Access” to conditions of confinement is possible only via letters and telephone calls from incarcerated men and women sharing of their experiences. Youngsters in juvenile facilities also reach out to tell their stories. In responding to these testimonies and requests from within New Jersey and throughout the country, the AFSC enables individuals to self-advocate; leading to empowerment.

The Supervising Attorney is responsible for supervision and support of Legal Services Staff based out of our Red Bank office; providing direct legal representation; monitoring project goals and objectives and developing reports for funders; and participation in local, state, and national advocacy activities. The Supervising Attorney will also play a key role in developing pro se clinics and community legal orientations, facilitating training sessions for advocates, and organizing legal screenings and workshops for low-income immigrants.

The Legal Assistant will be part of a team providing immigration legal services to low- income immigrants in . This position primarily supports the program’s fee-based affirmative immigration practice, with a focus on family-based immigration filings before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The Social Worker will be part of AFSC’s Detention and Deportation Defense Initiative, a publicly-funded project that provides representation for immigrants who are detained or are facing removal in New Jersey. The Social Worker will provide intensive case management for clients of the office, including creating comprehensive release plans for detained clients, and working toward securing referrals for services such as medical and mental health treatment, housing, public benefits, and counseling for particularly vulnerable clients and their families.
