AFSC's Civic Space Global Initiative works to address the increasing closing of civic space around the world. We support active networks to protect civic space. We also conduct research and advocacy.
Trends towards restricting civic space are gaining momentum globally. Governments and authorities are attempting to silence civil society in a variety of ways. These include harassment and intimidation, restrictive laws, and detaining protestors. Other examples are attacking journalists, censorship, and detaining and prosecuting human rights defenders.
AFSC started focusing on the protection of civic space during the COVID-19 pandemic through the Under the Mask project. The Global Civic Space Initiative continues to build on this work.
We work to assist and learn from civil society and impacted communities. Together we partner to protect and expand civic space. We work to advance civil liberties, rights, and cooperation to foment positive and sustainable change.
