Our hearts are broken by the tragic loss of our dear friend and former AFSC photographer, Ismail Abu Hatab. Ismail was killed yesterday – along with at least 38 others – when Israel bombed the Al Baqa Cafe in Gaza City Beach. The Cafe by the Sea is known as a sanctuary where journalists, activists, and civilians sought respite, connection, and the simple dignity of hope. Ismail Abu Hatab was more than our colleague—he was a kind soul and a dedicated professional. May Ismail and all those who were killed in the attack rest in peace. We vow to carry your light.

We are also holding in the light two former participants in AFSC’s Palestine Youth Program, who are now struggling for their lives in Gaza hospitals stripped bare by destruction, and a third who was also injured in the attack. All three are incredibly kind, smart, and played a huge role in our activities with youth. No one should endure pain without medicine or adequate medical care under constant threat of bombing.

Today we unite together in grief, extending our deepest condolences to Ismail’s family, friends, and all who are mourning this immense loss. May their memory be a blessing, and may we honor them by continuing the values they lived by.

We will not let you be reduced to numbers. We will continue advocating to bring to an end this genocide that has taken the lives of so many of our loved ones. We will continue to work for liberation and justice, for the dead and for the living.
