Vanhthong Thorkhoualoua: A Young Leader in Lao PDR Promoting Climate Justice and Peace

In the serene landscapes of Lao PDR, Vanhthong Thorkhoualoua is making significant strides in climate justice and peacebuilding. As a co-founder of the Volunteer for Community Development, he addresses climate change challenges, particularly in the Nam Nga unit of Viengxay district, Houaphanh province.

Confronting Climate Challenges

Laos, like many Southeast Asian countries, faces significant threats from climate change. These impacts are far-reaching, affecting agriculture, livelihoods, and the fabric of rural communities. Through the AFSC’s collaborative Asia Youth Young People for Action (AYA) initiative, Vanhthong has connected with young leaders across four countries (Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Lao PDR), fostering a network of passionate individuals (who are connected to youth networks and movements) dedicated to issues of common concern, like climate justice and peace. His involvement in AYA has facilitated discussions and initiatives aimed at exploring how urban populations in Nam Nga perceive and are affected by climate change.

A key aspect of Vanhthong's work is community engagement. Since 2021, he organized training/workshops for over 300 participants and have effectively leveraged his extensive volunteering experience and robust network with over 40 organizations to ensures that the voices of the most affected and marginalized communities are heard. This approach is crucial for effective policy advocacy and capacity building, addressing systemic issues related to climate change and urban development. Vanhthong and his team are also focused on bridging gaps in data and representation. They are committed to gathering robust data on rural and coastal areas and ensuring marginalized groups are included in policy discussions. This inclusive approach is vital for creating comprehensive and effective interventions.

Empowering Youth through Environmental Action

Last year, Vanhthong received a small grant from the AFSC-AYA initiative which Vanhthong used to focused on a local initiative the Young Leader in Environmental Action. This project trained and mentored young people how to deal with environmental disasters in Lao PDR and future crises according to goal #13th ‘Climate Action’ and goal #16 ‘promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development’ of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Volunteer for Community Project is part of Vanhthong trainings for youth to understand climate change in Laos, the ASEAN region, and countries along the Mekong River.

“We aim to focus on youth development, encourage youth to be brave, empower youth to be responsible for the environment, and have ideas that go in the direction of

sustainable development. Encouraging young people to know the environment, to be responsible for the environment, to participate in promoting sustainable development goals, and combating global warming is the duty of all of us, the young people who will inherit the future and make this community better.”

Achieving Impact and Driving Change

The impact of Vanhthong's work is evident in the community's growing awareness and engagement with climate issues. Through town hall meetings, stakeholder workshops, and digital platforms, he has initiated dialogues that bring diverse stakeholders together to discuss and address climate-related challenges. The potential impact of these efforts is vast, encompassing environmental, social, economic, health, and governance aspects. By understanding ground realities and engaging communities in meaningful ways, Vanhthong is paving the way for sustainable and resilient urban development in Laos.

AYA and the Broader Vision

Vanhthong's involvement with AYA has not only enhanced his skills and knowledge but also expanded his vision. The connections and collaborations formed through AYA have enriched his approach to climate justice and peacebuilding, making his work more impactful.

“The policies in the city are now more tied with the youth. The leaders in the city are now listening to the comments of the young people. The vision of the young people is getting more attention in our area. I believe some of the work that we’ve been doing in the past is coming into fruition. We are seeing the benefits of all the work we did through the years. And we always keep on training.”

Through his dedicated efforts, Vanhthong is not only making a difference in his community but also setting a powerful example for young leaders across the region. His work in climate justice and peacebuilding continues to inspire and drive change toward a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive future.
