From March 16-20, 2025, a 13-person high-level Ethiopian delegation embarked on a five-day study tour to Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa, organized by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), in partnership with Ethiopia's Ministry of Justice.
The Ethiopian delegation was also joined by experts from the African Union, the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation South Africa, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation South, TJ experts from the Gambia, Sierra Leone, Togo, Kenya, Burundi, among others. The participants engaged directly with South Africa's transitional justice legacy, visiting critical sites like the Apartheid Museum, Constitutional Hill, and the National Prosecuting Authority. The study tour gave room for lessons in truth-seeking, prosecutions, reparations, and institutional reforms to be drawn and taken back to strengthen the Ethiopian TJ process.
