Jose is a first-generation Mexican American who recently graduated from Hope Academy. He comes from a farmworker family. Jose values community, family, and friends. Joining the AFSC youth group has helped him become more social and encouraged him to continue his education. Jose will be the first in his family to go to college in the spring.

Jose has been involved in the work to shut down The Homestead Detention Center and continues to advocate for all youth while developing his own leadership skills. He at times can be shy but sees himself as a big dreamer.

Artist statement:

“I am not the best artist but enjoyed making these three paintings.”

The king (middle)

“I painted myself with a crown to show that I am a king. It’s a reminder to keep thinking of my self-worth. Though at times I may feel down, I must keep remining myself that I am a lot more than I think I am.”

My story (far-right)

“This painting represents my story. I decided to share a little about what I've gone through because I find it difficult to speak up, I decided that writing it over my canvas would let my story be heard and read more than I could ever say it.”
