On May 1, AFSC joined with communities and organizations across the country for rallies, marches, and other actions to oppose mass detention and deportation of immigrants and to highlight the need to create "Sanctuary Everywhere" for all people.
As immigrants in the U.S. face increased threats and fears under the Trump administration, AFSC staff have worked with community members to create sanctuary in schools, public spaces, congregations, and in cities and counties. AFSC also advocates on the federal level, calling on Congress reject additional funding for immigration enforcement and border militarization.
The May Day events were an opportunity to come together "for a powerful purpose, highlighting a vision of genuine economic justice, centering the importance of immigration, labor and justice for our communities." said Paul-Andre Mondesir, an advocate for the Haitian community in AFSC's Miami office.
