Be a part of AFSC by starting a Student Committee at your Florida school

The American Friends Immigrant Services Program (AFIS), based in Miami, has a number of volunteer opportunities available for energetic individuals throughout the southeast who are passionate about immigration and human rights and who are interested either in assisting in the office or in organizing educational events and activities in their communities. Law Student Internships

Legal internships/volunteer opportunities with the staff attorney are available to law students currently attending ABA accredited law schools. Pro bono credit may be available through your law school. Internships involve work on affirmative and defensive asylum applications, N.A.C.A.R.A. Suspension of Deportation cases, Battered spouse petitions, legal research and outreach activities in rural Florida. University Internships

Graduate, and undergraduate students can benefit from an internship at AFIS. Internships are available in specific project research on various international and human rights issues; immigration direct services; and in the areas of marketing, publications & project development. Interns may also participate in AFIS’ community education work including Know Your Rights Days. Fluency in Spanish or Haitian Creole is especially useful in assisting clients or working in the office. Internships are available for Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, with an expectation of at least 10-15 hours per week although shorter time hours are available for first year law students. Although internships are unpaid, school credit may be available. Students considering an internship should inquire with their school, The Florida Bar Foundation, or other institutions about fellowships and funding possibilities. High School Internships

High School students who need to complete their community service hours or who are simply interested in volunteering are encouraged to apply as well and can be involved both in community education programs and in general office work. Our office assists many indigent clients from Central America and Haiti and due to the large volume of asylum cases now being processed as NACARA, there are substantially more calls coming into our office. Assisting a NACARA client would both be a wonderful way to fulfill your pro bono public service requirement under Rule 4-6.1 and be a touching way to assist a deserving individual.
