JOIN THE WE DIVEST CAMPAIGN
Are your retirement funds supporting Israeli occupation?
TIAA-CREF, one of the world’s largest retirement funds and a self-described “leader in socially responsible investing,” invests nearly $600 million in corporations that profit from Israeli military occupation. Some of these corporations include Caterpillar, Motorola Solutions, Veolia, Northrup Grumman, Elbit, and Hewlett-Packard.
In 2009, Jewish Voice for Peace launched the “We Divest” campaign, demanding TIAA-CREF stop investing in corporations that enable the destruction of Palestinian homes and orchards, the expansion of Israeli settlements and infrastructure, checkpoint surveillance of Palestinian communities, and provide weapons used against civilians. The campaign does not ask people to directly divest from TIAA-CREF. Rather, it organizes retirement fund recipients to exercise their rights as shareholders and pressure TIAA-CREF (a company with $441 billion in assets) to divest from corporations that profit from the military occupation.
In June 2010, the AFSC Board of Directors officially endorsed JVP’s efforts to call on TIAA-CREF to divest, and joined the national effort of people of conscience who uphold our deepest values and proud traditions by supporting Palestinians and Israelis who are engaged in nonviolent resistance to the occupation. Over 20,000 people have signed the petition to TIAA-CREF on the web, wedivest.org.
Around the country, AFSC is working with students and faculty to create awareness and generate support for the We Divest campaign. The campaign petition can be signed here (www.wedivest.org).
