Local authorities in Haiti improve their dialogue skills

Police and other local authorities attended the AFSC-sponsored training to help get more connected with local grassroots peace-builders, including young people, women, and people still displaced from the 2010 earthquake.

To build bridges between urban grassroots organizations and public authorities, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) invited public authorities to a training in Port au Prince City, Haiti. This was one step toward AFSC’s work to connect its local partners—youth, women, internally displaced people, and community-based organizations—with local authorities. The training focused on dialogue, conflict transformation, and participatory planning.

Participants represented 37 urban neighborhoods, as well as different sectors, including the Social Affairs Ministry, National Police of Haiti, and community police, justice tribunals, city halls and municipality delegations, and the Ministry for Extreme Poverty, among others.

The event was also supported by a number of international and Haitian organizations that presented their experiences in participative planning and prevention: Cordaid, the Community Violence Reduction Program of MINUSTAH (United Nations) JUPED, Lakou Lapè, SAKALA-Pax Christi Haiti, AVSI and the Justice and Peace Episcopal Commission.

“This training has helped me to increase my knowledge in conflicts mediation of and the promotion of peace in my jurisdiction,” said the inspector in charge of a police station in Port-au–Prince.

The office of American Friends Service Committee in Haiti is preparing to organize the second phase of this certification program during July 2014.
