Summer Social Change Institute
Helping YOUth Make a Difference
June 9-13 & 16-20, 1:00 to 5:00pm
The American Friends Service Committee believes that youth have a crucial part to play in creating a more just and peaceful community and world! So we hope you will join us this summer as we explore issues of economic injustice, violence, war and what we can do.
The Institute, developed for high school-aged youth, will provide training and hands on experience in the practice of nonviolent social change. Youth will learn organizing, public speaking, media, advocacy and other skills to increase economic justice, peace and equality. The two weeks of experiential learning / popular education activities will include afternoon workshops, organizing meetings, visits with local activists and planning and conducting one or more social change actions.
We have spaces for twelve to fourteen qualified youth who want to help improve their community and the world. A stipend of $165 / week for each of the two weeks of the project will be provided. Some assistance with bus passes may also be provided.
As a participant you will:
- Meet other local youth who are passionate about positively impacting the world.
- Attend interactive sessions to gain skills for social change and deeper knowledge of issues important to you.
- Hear from prominent local activists.
- Help organize an action for economic justice, peace and /or equality.
- And much more….
Most Institute activities will take place at the AFSC office / Penn Valley Friends Meeting House at 4405 Gillham Road, Kansas City, MO.
YOU CAN MAKEA DIFFERENCE.
We hope you will take advantage of this special opportunity to increase your knowledge and skills to help change the world.
