Kansas City Area School and Youth Groups are Invited to take advantage of powerful opportunity for youth development and leadership
AFSC's Youth Civic Engagement work in Kansas City had a great year and we are looking for groups to collaborate with for programs for 2014-2015. Our goal is to provide creative ways for youth to learn about issues important to them and out community and to speak out for positive nonviolent social change!
Our interns have worked with dozens of groups and hundreds of youth through three programs: the "If I Had a Trillion Dollars" (IHTD) Youth Film Festival; If I Could Change the World" Spoken Word Project; and our summer Social Change Institute and ongoing Social Change Youth meetings.
This Fall, using experiential learning activities, AFSC interns will conduct two to three 45 to 60 minute sessions to help youth learned about federal budget priorities, develop plans for the message of their videos and gain skills to create a 3-minute videos describing how they would allocate U.S. tax dollars to better meet our community's needs. KC area youth films will be shown on the big screen at the Tivoli Theater in January at a KC IHTD Festival. Youth groups whose films are selected as official national entries are invited to attend the national IHTD Film Festival in Washington, DC in April. To see some of the IHTD films made by Kansas City groups, click here or visit the national IHTD http://ihtd.org/ website.
Then beginning in January AFSC will work with groups providing 90 minute to two hour in-class or on-site trainings for the "If I Could Change the World" Spoken Word Project. Following these trainings youth will be invited to attend a day long workshop with four to six spoken word poets to refine, develop and perform spoken word performance pieces. Youth will then be invited to perform at an opening performance at the Writers Place as well as participate in performances several additional venues. Click here to see a playlist of youth performances.
The American Friends Service Committee believes that youth have a crucial part to play in creating a more just and peaceful community and world! And so AFSC invites youth to participate in a 2-week Social Change Institute, June 2015. High school-aged youth will participate in training and hands on experiences in the practice of nonviolent social change. The two weeks of experiential learning / popular education activities will include afternoon workshops, organizing meetings, visits with local activists and planning and conducting one or more social change actions. Youth who complete the Institute will receive a stipend. Go to http://bit.ly/KC-social-change for details. Also contact us to find out about ongoing meeting of the Social Change Youth.
We hope to work with you this year!
