“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity; it is an act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.”—Nelson MandelaPhoto: AFSC
As Nelson Mandela struggles for his life, the American Friends Service Committee joins the global prayer for his recovery. We also wish strength and endurance for his wife, Graça Machel, and the whole family, at this difficult time.
Today and in the future, we shall hold high Nelson Mandela’s vision of social justice, freedom, and peace for all. As a part of the global movement, we once again commit our work to illuminate the spirit of Nelson Mandela and his legacy of reconciliation, forgiveness, and healing. As part of our enduring respect for him, we will continue to support, encourage, and accompany communities on their quests for peace.
Simply put, we shall honor him in our nonviolent work to end inequalities, exclusions, and injustices and build a culture of peace across the world.
