The AFSC's New York Metropolitan Region along with Friends from New York Yearly Meeting have released a statement about the proposed Islamic Community Center near the site of the World Trade Towers.
They reflect on unhealed wounds since September 11th and its aftermath, differences in worldviews, and the importance of deeply listening to “the other.” They welcome the proposed structure alongside other mosques and houses of worship as evidence of our nation’s pluralism. The statement calls for all people to address the rising fear, threats and violence sparked by the controversy, and for an end to the political posturing. The signers stand with those who fear retaliation for their views or memberships.
This statement was released August 31, 2010.
