AFSC's Youth for Peace Program supports volunteer organizations for Youth in Indonesia.
These organizations are led by young people for young people. A key focus is on activities which bring together young people from different ethnicities and religions to promote and celebrate diversity and tolerance. Youth for Peace works in Aceh, Yogyakarta, Maluku and West Timor.
Young people and students have played a pivotal role in every social and political transformation in Indonesia, from independence, to the fall of Suharto in 1998, to current anti-corruption and government reformation campaigns. However, in the recent political and economic climate, this youth activist tradition has sometimes been manipulated to feed ethnic and religious divides. Young people need positive, non-violent models to challenge injustice, resolve conflict, and bring about change.
