HOUSING PROGRAM

Believing that safe, affordable housing is a first step toward helping families stabilize their lives, New Empowerment for Women Plus works hand in hand with the community-based non-profit Logan County Improvement League to help low-income families improve or replace their housing to avoid becoming part of the “rural homeless.”

While Logan County has a high rate of home ownership, the condition of many of these homes has been described as “third world” by members of summer work teams who come in to make repairs.

Many of the county’s most vulnerable citizens – the elderly, the very young and minorities – live in dangerously substandard conditions. Currently the county has no ongoing programs to provide major home repairs or provide owner-occupied housing for very low-income families.

Throughout the year, NEW Plus hosts work teams, which replace roofs, repair floors and make general repairs to ensure that houses are safe.

Working with the Improvement League, NEW Plus has launched a campaign to build a new house for two disabled sisters, who live in a terribly substandard house on a steep hillside. The women are only able to leave the house by ambulance, and the difficult access poses risk to emergency workers who answer calls to the house.
