The AFSC Washington Office serves as the organization’s primary representative in Washington DC policy circles, working with Congress, the Executive branch, foreign diplomats, non-governmental agencies, faith-based colleagues, and the press.
Outreach to policy makers and the influencers on the issues is enhanced by the stream of AFSC staff, sponsored visitors, and delegations, from both the U.S. and abroad, whose visits in Washington are arranged and facilitated by the office.
AFSC Washington Office staff work on some the of highest priority issues for AFSC:
- Iraq
- Israel/Palestine
- Colombia
- Civil Rights and Liberties
- Economic Justice in the US.
The Washington Office has a rich history starting in the segregated Washington DC of 1930's. In addition to housing policy-advocacy staff, in the past the office has served as a guest house for international visitors known as Davis House. Responding to changing trends, the growing strategic plan needs for Washington policy advocacy, and increased alternatives for overnight housing in the area, Davis House, the guest house operation, closed in 2005.
