Bananas, Chocolate, Coffee and handbags! Celebrate World Fair Trade day and the opportunity to learn more about global producers. Chicagoan’s join with more than 1000 other fair trade cities around the world to recognize the growing movement of ethical consumers.

The event, co-sponsored by Chicago Fair Trade and the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, will focus this year on ethical apparel as the campaign for a Sweatfree Chicago moves forward in City Council that would govern public procurement of apparel. The disaster in Bangladesh last year heightened awareness of the dangerous conditions for the majority of apparel workers. Learn more about ethical apparel by viewing our Going Sweatfree, a fashions installation in Daley Plaza that will contrast worker conditions of ethical and mainstream apparel.

Wednesday’s program’s emcee Emanuel Kuntzelman of Greenheart will highlight fair trade’s links to the sustainability movement and include remarks by Alderman Ameya Pawar, sponsor of the sweatfree ordinance in City Council and Chicago’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Karen Weigert.

Thursday’s Noon Program features WBEZ’s World View host Jerome McDonnell broadcasting live from Daley Plaza, engaging both vendors and consumers with the stories behind the products that they buy.
