WOMEN SPEAKING TRUTH TO POWER!

The DSM Branch of Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom invites YOU to a BANQUET honoring activist Jane Magers and columnist Rekha Basu.

Yes, indeed, the pen IS mightier than the sword, as Rekha continues to prove. Her keen insights and well-honed phrases cut through the fog of propaganda, misrepresentation, gender discrimination, racial injustice and the stupefying vileness of some extremists. Her byline has appeared in The New York Times, The Nation, USA Today, India Today and The International Herald Tribune, among other publications.

Jane is the consummate activist, who lives and breathes her beliefs. She has been the voice and the heart of our WILPF Des Moines Branch in standing firm for diversity and justice in her community, bringing understanding to the human cost of the U.S. nuclear and coal energy policies, and much more. She is tireless, unrelenting and, most of all, effective in her pursuit of truth and justice.

On May 26, 2011, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin signed into law a bill establishing a single-payer health care plan for the state, making Vermont the first state to do so. And family-practice physician, Dr. Deb Richter was instrumental in making it happen!

“In my 20 years of practice as a family physician, I have encountered dozens of cases where the main contributing factor to a person’s death was the lack of health insurance for most of their lives.”
