Putting Dr. King's Message into Action in 2011

Join us for this inspiring forum including a panel of youth and adult speakers and video of Dr. King. Learn how you can take action in response to his call for a more just and peaceful world.

As Kansas City prepares to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the U.S. and Kansas City confront many challenges including a continuing economic crisis; severe unemployment (8%+ white; 15%+ black); high rates of violent crime; and over $1 trillion spent on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Though many are familiar with Dr. King’s “dream” of racial equality, his prophetic vision and actions also addressed the range of moral, justice and peace issues, relevant to the challenges we face today.

The forum, a part of the 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration, will be moderated by Airick Leonard West, President of the KCMO School Board. A panel of youth and community leaders will share their thoughts on King’s message and the needs of today, including: Rev. Sam Mann, Board Chair of SCLC and retired St. Mark Union Church pastor, commenting on federal budget priorities and military spending; Rashid Junaid, Street Intervention Worker, Aim4Peace, on public safety; Andres Dominguez, Health Care Foundation of GKC on economic security; and Ursula Copeland, KCMO Health Department on health care.  Remarks will also be made by Engage KC Youth Leadership Board members: Angela Pearson, Asia Jones, Manny Abarca, Darius Grayer.

Panel member comments and discussion will be followed by a presentation by Jerry Jones and Damon Daniel, community organizers with Community Creating Opportunities on advocacy and how forum participations can help put Dr. King’s words into action.

Forum sponsors and tabling groups include: Abiding Peace Lutheran Church , Aim4Peace , American Friends Service Committee , Black Health Care Coalition , Cherith Brook Catholic Worker, Communities Creating Opportunity , Engage KC Leadership Board, Heartland OWL, Johnson/Wyandotte Counties NOW, Kansas City Jobs with Justice, KCMO NAACP Youth Council, Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity (MORE2), Missouri Association for Social Welfare-KC, PeaceWorks, PROMO Fund, reStart , Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City and The Green Foundation
