Sr. Helen Prejean at Coalition's Annual Meeting

Sr. Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States and of The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions, will be the special guest speaker at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the NH Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.

Sr. Helen is a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph in New Orleans LA.  She spent her first years with the Sisters teaching religion to junior high school students.  Realizing that being on the side of poor people was essential to her ministry she moved into the St. Thomas Housing Project in New Orleans and began working at the Hope House from 1984 to 1986.  During this time, she began to correspond with Patrick Sonnier, a prisoner on death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, and later became his spiritual adviser. After witnessing his execution, she wrote Dead Man Walking, which later became a movie, an opera and a play for high schools and colleges.

The Annual Meeting will also include presentation of the annual Governor William Badger Award and a review of the Coalition's recent activities.
