How many people know that life expectancy in China doubled from 32 years in 1949 to 65 years by 1976?  This film presents the rarely-told story of how the health care system  in China, and the whole society,  was revolutionized during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) under the leadership of Mao Tsetung. 
The "barefoot doctor" movement in China was unprecedented. Millions of young people from the countryside and the cities were trained in basic health care to treat the most common illnesses and went out to the countryside to treat the peasants.
This meant hundreds of millions of people received medical care for the first time in their lives.  Many doctors also went to rural areas. read more
