From Al-Masara to Susya, Al-Walaja to Beit Hanun, Bab al-Shams to Al-Manatir, Palestinians are leading non-violent direct actions and popular resistance to call attention to and end the confiscation of their land, destruction of their property, denial of their rights, and the entrenchment of Israel’s occupation. Actions are varied and creative, including Catholic masses, marches, hunger strikes, protest villages, street theater, sit-ins, and more. The Israeli response to these protests has been overwhelmingly violent and militarized. Protesters have been tear-gassed, pepper sprayed, arrested, beaten, injured and killed. This violent response does at times lead to acts of violence by Palestinians, but overwhelmingly Palestinian popular resistance actions remained nonviolent in both intent and action. Palestinians are often joined in their acts of protests by international and Israeli supporters, but it is important to remember that these are Palestinian led initiatives designed and defined by Palestinians to achieve their rights. Outside supporters play a secondary and supporting role.
