Congress is considering an economic stimulus package. They know that investing in things that create jobs will help. But they also know that the war is costing a LOT of money, and they just bailed out Wall St. That makes for tough choices.
Over half the federal budget is already tied up in the military-industrial complex (replacing all the weapons, vehicles, etc used in the wars. Good for the economy? A little. But a lot of other things do more good.
Real security will come not with an unfocused "war on terror" that lashes out at other countries (especially when they are located in strategically important places) when the terrorists are not agents of any country. Real security will come when, as other countries do, the US treats terrorists as criminals and pursues justice using those tools. It is time to invest in the tools of international justice.
End the war/occupation in Iraq: The Iraqi Parliament has been fighting with the Bush administration to get the US to commit to ending the occupation. No long term bases. No protection for US soldiers who commit atrocities. Out now. OBAMA NEEDS TO LEND HIS VOICE TO CALLING FOR COMPLETE WITHDRAWAL. And he needs us to be loud and visible to counter the voices of those who have a vested interest in endless war. The military-industrial complex will shout how it provides jobs.
