On Dec. 1, 2012, with the frenzied debate around the so called “fiscal cliff” raging in the media and in Washington, D.C., the American Friends Service Committee in Kansas City, wth cosponsors by Jobs Now, UMKC Economics Club and National Lawyers Guild, Occupy KC, Move to Amend, and PeaceWorks KC,held a lively forum titled, The Fiscal Cliff on Trial.

In this opinion article, AFSC's Robin Aura Kanegis points out that in this season of federal budget debates "the Pentagon has apparently developed the ultimate cloaking mechanism - one that protects the military's budget bloat from mathematical reality. The military budget accounts for more than half of federal discretionary spending, as well as nearly half of all military spending worldwide. But despite this lopsided investment, increased military appropriations are set to glide past Congress' so-called budget hawks like a Stealth Bomber."

Rockefeller at odds with Obama on heating-bill help

President Obama and House Republicans want to make significant cuts in federal funding that helps low-income families pay their heating bills this winter. Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller doesn't like that idea.

West Virginia's senior senator wants them to reverse their plans to cut funding available through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. AFSC's Rick Wilson weighs in.
