On Dec. 1, 2012, with the frenzied debate around the so called “fiscal cliff” raging in the media and in Washington, D.C., the American Friends Service Committee in Kansas City, wth cosponsors by Jobs Now, UMKC Economics Club and National Lawyers Guild, Occupy KC, Move to Amend, and PeaceWorks KC,held a lively forum titled, The Fiscal Cliff on Trial.

The American Friends Service Committee in Kansas City is holding Social Action and Peace Organizing training for high school-aged youth wanting to learn about how they can help create a more just and peaceful world.

You know cutting programs for those most in need, for those who have lost their jobs or homes due to the economic recession or cutting benefits for the elderly on fixed income is not the answer to our economic problems.

Unfinished Portraits Afghan War Memorial Event

October 7th will mark the 11th Anniversary of the start of the Afghan war. On October 6th the American Friends Service Committee with other area organizations will hold a memorial event including the display from 6pm to midnight of an art installation, Unfinished Portrait, an Iraq and Afghan war memorial by Priti Gulati Cox, a Salina, KS artist and reading and spoken word performances.

Visions of Peace Parade

A Peace Parade was led by Peace Planters one of over 30 groups supporting the AFSC organized Visions of Peace at the Crossroads Festival on June 1, 2012. The parade include giant puppets created by Joann McMillan and a song written by Nick Pick for the event.

On April 17, 2012, Tax Day over 150 area residents stood up, marched and placed the blame for the U.S.’s economic suffering directly where it belonged: Tax cuts and tax cheats; Financial Speculation and Policies Favoring only the 1%; and excessive military spending.
