Petitioners Needed This Week to Put the Budget for All Referendum on the Ballot in Your Town!
This is a general appeal for 2 hours of your time this weekend or next week from the American Friends Service Committee, Mass. Peace Action, the Right to the City Civic Action Alliance and 20 other peace, labor and community groups – the sponsors of the statewide “Budget for All” statewide referendum campaign (www.Budget4AllMass.org).
We are now entering the final week in which to collect the signatures needed to place our message to Congress and the President on the ballot in districts across Massachusetts: No More Cuts, Invest in Jobs, Fair Taxes, End the War & Out of Afghanistan!
Our hardworking volunteers across the state have collected over 10,000 signatures. We are already on the ballot in 3 districts and expect to add another 10 or 12 senate or rep. districts over the next 8 or 9 days. But there are many districts still in play where we can make the ballot if we give it the old college try.
We are now setting up teams of volunteers who can spend a few hours this weekend or next week. Most of these volunteers will go out near where they live. Others will be mobile teams who will move about the state, wherever a final push might put the referendum on the ballot in districts outside of Greater Boston.
Volunteers will go to farmers markets, public libraries, supermarkets, and shopping centers. There you will encounter, among others, some of the most caring human beings you will find anywhere, people who will restore your faith in humanity.
We will provide the basic training needed to volunteers who are new to the cause.
If you can volunteer a few hours of your time sometime over the next 10 days, please send an email to:
Paul Shannon at the American Friends Service Committee at email@example.com.
Put “Referendum Volunteer” in the subject line and let us know the day and hours you can volunteer, where you live, a phone number, whether you have a car, and whether you can be deployed anywhere throughout the state or whether you want to work near where you live.
In this critical election year it is essential that we place our agenda before the people for their consideration and confront the austerity agenda coming out of Washington that will ruin the lives of millions and promise never ending war. The Budget for All referendum is one way for us to make our voices heard.
P.S. If you are unable to volunteer we still need you to come by the AFSC office in North Cambridge (2161 Massachusetts Ave (617-661-6130) or in Western Mass (2 Conz Street, Suite 2B Northampton , MA , 01060 (413-584-8975) to sign the petition for your district – or better yet, take a petition to circulate in your neighborhood or place of work or worship.
**Signatures are no longer needed for Arlington, Newton or Brookline (!). Everywhere else is still in play.
